March Madness: Big upsets push out top-ranked teams

Yahoo Finance Live breaks down the latest statistics on March Madness brackets and the upsets seen in the tournament.

Video Transcript

BRAD SMITH: But we're also going to see this weekend what comes on the front of March Madness. Of course, the annual time of the year, the most wonderful for basketball or college basketball fans out there. We've seen March Madness off to quite the start here with some exits of number two seeded Kentucky already to a small school in Jersey City, New Jersey, Saint Peter's. And we're still waiting for their basketball team to get verified on Twitter. However, they were the big story of, at least, the first slate of first round games that took place.

And Rachelle, I'm not sure if you're a March Madness fan, but for those fans that are out there who filled out brackets, we've got some stats for you because there's a lot of busted brackets out there. ESPN had about 17 million people fill out brackets, and it looks like they only have, at least, at the end of March 17. So yesterday evening, at the end of the games that took place, only 743 remaining brackets were still perfect at that time. And so a lot of busted brackets. Not sure if you have a favorite team, Rachelle. I'm personally a big Duke University basketball fan, always have been.

And I'm not sure if it'll still be that way, perhaps, after Coach K leaves. But at the end of the day, we're going to see some exciting basketball over these next couple of weeks. And those 743 people who are left that have some perfect brackets, or at least, 743 perfect brackets that are left, they're going to have a hard time trying to figure out exactly where they find their footing from here, or maintain their footing, I should say. But a ton of basketball set to come in a blitz of fashion.

RACHELLE AKUFFO: And, you know, so Gonzaga is usually the team that I tend to gravitate towards. And I think it started-- I can't remember how many years ago-- with this Cinderella story. I love a good Cinderella story. I like a good upset. I'm blown about these 743 perfect brackets. What did they see that made them call that?

And it could be friends and family of, like, people who go to this school. I'm very impressed that they were able to call that. It's amazing how many people's brackets got knocked out just by this one move. I don't know what that means in terms of sports betting and how much that got thrown off by this, but I love a good upset. So I'm all for a good Cinderella story. I hope they progress further and further into the bracket.

BRAD SMITH: Shouldn't that make the sports betting a little bit more fun this time around? We already know, as we've had our own Josh Schafer and David Briggs breaking down the sports betting side of the equation, where it's not just on the brackets now in an office pools or corporate pools, it's also in the game by game betting, because you have more states that have brought the mobile betting options online as compared to last year. That's certainly going to create an interesting appetite even for some of these Cinderella stories, as they move forward.

And then on the other side of this, we already know that the advertising has been flying here. We had seen some of the totals, or at least, this broader headline from CBS, that they had been sold out of inventory prior to the broader event in March Madness in the tournament beginning. And so we'll see exactly what some of those sums may have been for the biggest advertisers that are spending big time throughout the campaign.

We know that Capital One typically runs a major ad campaign, usually featuring Charles Barkley, Samuel L. Jackson, and Spike Lee, quite the consortium of friendship that's going on for years that all of us get a little bit more closer to seemingly every year this time of year during March Madness. But we will see, and perhaps you and I will have our picks by the time Dave Briggs gets back next week for who will win March Madness.

RACHELLE AKUFFO: Well, I love it. I mean, obviously, speaking of NFL football, everyone gets to join in. So I love the sense of community around March Madness. We'll all be tracking it.
